Biography

Graham began his musical studies on the piano aged 5 and then began learning the organ aged 11 and the trombone aged 14. On completing his A-levels in 2002, Graham studied music at Colchester Institute and gained a BA(Hons) with a 2:1 in July 2005.

From 2006 – 2011 Graham was a Peripatetic Music Teacher for Southampton Music Service, teaching Piano and Keyboard in many different schools across Southampton. As well as teaching, Graham was involved in various different ensembles within the music service, ranging from leading sectionals at the Youth Orchestra to assisting the Jazz Workshop.

Graham has a long association with the Music department at Richard Taunton Sixth Form College, Southampton in various capacities. Since September 2010, he has been the piano teacher there, working with students studying on the A-level and BTEC Music courses. From 2014 – 2016, Graham was part of the academic staff at the college, teaching on the A-level Music course as part of his PGCE.

Graham’s introduction to choral music ‘officially’ began in 1994, when he sang ‘Messiah’ as a treble. Graham’s first musical leadership appointment was with his local church choir at the age of 14. Since then, Graham has continued to work with various choral societies in the South, as well as being assistant musical director of Southampton Youth Choir and Southampton Young Singers West when working for the Music Service. Graham was appointed accompanist to Sarisbury Choral Society in September 2005 and became their musical director in January 2009. Graham was appointed musical director of Winchester City Festival Choir in February 2011. Both of these choirs are part of Winchester and County Music Festival and Graham has much involvement with this, including presiding over the festival concert at Romsey Abbey in 2013 and in Winchester Cathedral in 2017. In January 2016, Graham was appointed the accompanist of Southampton Choral Society and is currently the acting Musical Director.

In September 2015, he became the Director of Music at St. James’ West End, where he is the principal organist and has responsibility of the choir.

Away from choral music, Graham is part of the music staff for the Hamble Area Youth Bands as a conductor and percussion ‘expert’!

In the unlikely event of any spare time, Graham can be found at a spa or a steam rally.
